Fearson's Aces Card Trick

by Steve Fearson

Effect

The magician places the four Aces on the table face up. He then asks the spectator to take the Aces and shuffle them face down. After the spectator is finished, the magician spreads the Aces on the table and asks the spectator to remove one, look at it, and memorize it. The magician then allows the spectator to place the Ace back anywhere into the packet of remaining Aces. Again, the spectator is instructed to shuffle the Aces. Next, the magician places the Aces face up on the table so that each Ace is clearly visible. He slaps an Ace and then removes it. He slaps two more Aces and removes them. The Ace that remains is the selected Ace.

Method

  1. Remove the four Aces from the deck.
  2. Place each Ace face up onto the table and call it's name out to the spectator.
  3. As you place the Aces face up on top of each other on the table, casually turn them so that the pip in the center is facing upwards. To confuse the spectator's, turn the Ace of Spades upside down instead of right side up.
  4. Turn the packet of Aces face down and hand it to a spectator to shuffle.
  5. If the spectator turns the cards while shuffling, you will have to perform a different trick. If not, turn your head away after you are confident that the spectator will not turn any cards.
  6. When the spectator is done, spread the cards on the table and ask the spectator to remove any one, look at it, and memorize it.
  7. As the spectator is memorizing his selection, secretly rotate the packet of remaining Aces 180 degrees.
  8. Spread the Aces again, and tell the spectator to replace his card anywhere in the packet of Aces.
  9. After the spectator has inserted his card, have the spectator shuffle again.
  10. When the spectator is done shuffling, take the Aces and deal them, one at a time, face up onto the table, placing each Ace to the right of the previous.
  11. Determine which card the spectator selected. If all of the cards are facing one direction except for the Ace of Spades, then the spectator selected the Ace of Diamonds. If all of the cards are facing one direction, the spectator selected the Ace of Spades. If the Ace of Clubs is facing the same direction as the Ace of Spades, the Ace of Clubs is the selection. Finally, if the Ace of Hearts is facing the same direction as the Ace of Spades, the Ace of Hearts is the selection.
  12. Slap your hand down on a card that isn't the spectator's Ace. Remove it.
  13. Slap you hand down on another card that isn't the spectator's Ace. Remove it also.
  14. Finally, motion to slap the spectator's Ace, but stop an inch before you hit it, move your hand to the other Ace, and remove it.
  15. Announce to the audience that the remaining Ace is the spectator's selection.
